The Shala And The Teacher

Yoga Mandir is a little bamboo yoga shala nestled in a quiet corner of Palolem, right next to a wetland. Yoga classes here are always attended by chirping birds, and sometimes a turtle or two.

Yoga Mandir aspires to provide a healthy, non-judgemental and peaceful space for students to practice yoga.

Morning, afternoon and evening drop-in yoga classes are led by Akshey, an E-RYT 500 hour senior yoga teacher with over 13 years experience. Akshey started his personal yogic journey many years ago in the Himalayan region of Uttarkashi, very close to the glaciers of the Ganges and home to many humble yoga masters.

Wanting to devote his life to yoga and share the discipline with others, Akshey went on to formally study yoga at the Bihar School of Yoga followed by scriptural studies from the monastic faculty of the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesh.

Akshey has practised under the tutelage of different senior Iyengar yoga teachers and is highly inspired by the Iyengar method. For this reason, you will often see him encouraging yoga prop usage to deepen and enhance the student's experience of the yoga asanas. He has travelled and taught extensively in various teacher training and workshop formats. Be it Hatha or Ashtanga, Akshey always emphasizes on correct form and alignment.

1 | Drop-in Yoga Classes

Our drop-in classes are for those who want to share their yoga space and practice with other yoga students. Without a doubt, group yoga classes offer a different level of energy, creating a very uplifting experience. Watching the teacher provide adjustments and variations to others gives the entire group an opportunity to learn about the deeper nuances of yoga asanas.

2 | 1-on-1 Personalized Yoga Classes

Our one-on-one classes are for those who prefer personalized attention and want a new perspective on yoga asanas according to their own body and goals. These classes provide students the opportunity to experience the true effects of yoga asanas at the physical, organic and mental level.

3 | Yoga Teacher Training Courses

We provide Yoga Alliance certified 200-hour yoga teacher training courses. Our yoga teacher training courses are for students who are committed to introducing and sharing the discipline of yoga in its simplest and most authentic form with others. These courses are non-residential, so while being friendly on the pockets, this allows students freedom and flexibility to explore the Goan culture through accommodation and food to suit their preferences. 4 | Yoga Workshops

Yoga workshops are conducted over select weekends and are based on specific elements of yoga practice like yoga therapy, prop usage and in-depth yoga posture analysis. Please contact Yoga Mandir for upcoming yoga workshops.

Drop-in Classes

HATHA

Yoga Mandir's signature style 90 minute Hatha class. Asanas are done by placing special emphasis on the strengthening and safety of joints. Cues are actively provided so that yoga students can also gain an intellectual understanding of each yoga asana and its deeper impact on the body. Various props including, wooden blocks, bolsters, ropes, belts and chairs are used in accordance with Iyengar yoga principles to facilitate flexibility and strength in the body. Each class is concluded with breathwork.

HATHA ALIGNMENT INTENSIVE

A 75 to 90 minute class, with acute focus on maintaining correct alignment around joint spaces. Each class has a specific theme and centers around a specific movement (for example: forward bends, backward bends, twists, core stability, inversions and foot work). This class is intense and demanding as asanas are held for longer periods of time.

ASHTANGA

A seamlessly structured 90 minute class, that takes you through the 70 asanas of the ashtanga yoga primary series sequence. In addition to respecting the traditional chronology of the series, the asanas are practiced intentionally and slowly - with close awareness of breath count and usage of props for safety. Ashtanga yoga is not for the faint of heart, so this class is both physically and mentally demanding.

YOGA NIDRA

Yoga Mandir's 40 minute yoga nidra (psychic sleep) class in which yoga students are taken through a guided meditation that helps them move awareness in their body and takes them through the 3 stages of consciousness (deep sleep state, dream state and awake state). This class is highly relaxing for the body's system and helps in breaking out of unfulfilling emotional and mental behavioural patterns.
